Chapter Eleven

A week passed, and close to noon, my phone vibrated in my hand, and I swiped the screen. Catherine texted, and I read the message.

Are you going to the concert this week? I need a ride.

Since today was Monday, I hadn’t made any plans for the weekend. Not that I would since I decided to turn into a recluse.

Me: I wasn’t planning to go.

I continued to watch the filming, waiting for her next message.

Catherine: Would you ask Alastair to be your date and pick me up, my treat?

My heart sank to my stomach, and I think it missed a few beats in the process. She wanted me to ask Landon on a date? That meant she had someone in mind for her, and this was a double date. He would drive home to help Catherine, and I would be the recipient of his kindness. Suddenly, the weekend couldn’t come fast enough.

I texted Alastair.

Me: Hi Alastair, Catherine wants us to double date, see the concert at the Performing Arts Center on Friday. Would you join us as my date so she can go without security?

I waited with anticipation for his text, tapping my phone in my hand. All kinds of thoughts entered my mind. He had plans. He would be on a work trip. He was in a serious relationship and would decline. I didn’t want to think about the last thought that entered my mind.

Prompt as usual, he replied within a few minutes. I almost jumped when my phone vibrated in my hand. My enthusiasm couldn’t be contained as I swiped across the screen with bated breath.

Alastair: That sounds fun. I’ll see you at 6:30.

I wanted to jump and shout my excitement, but I wasn’t alone, so I mentally celebrated. I sent Catherine a text.

Me: I would love to.

She replied as I strolled back to my office.

Catherine: Let’s go shopping for dresses tonight. I’ll pick you up.

She read my mind. Our promise to keep Alastair a friend remained, but I wanted to wear a new dress—look my best for him. We may not be a couple, but I could dream and enjoy our time together, maybe even push the limits without breaking my promise. I wanted to increase the time I spent with him on Friday. Our last visit turned out well except for burning my hand. Maybe we could duplicate our time together. I sent him another text

Me: Hey Alastair, Can you come early, and we can get a bite to eat before the concert?

The anticipation built, waiting for his reply. I’m not sure why my nerves were on–end. They just were.

Alastair: That sounds perfect. I’ll see you at 5:00.

My heart fluttered, and a smile spread across my lips. My day couldn’t get better than this. I’ll see my best friend Friday. I froze. My best friend. I don’t know why the thought surprised me, but I nodded. Much like Catherine, he was and would always be my best friend.

Friday took forever to come after buying my dress with Catherine.
